ESPN Disney Celebrity Tennis Battle of the Sexes Charity Event

Dr. Varma and Dr. Patterson were among celebrities on Sunday November 17, 2013 as they were the team physicians for the 21st annual Mylan World Team Tennis Smash Hits charity event, hosted by Elton John and tennis legend Billie Jean King at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. In front of a crowd of over 3,000 people, E. John and Andy Roddick beat Venus Williams and Marion Bartoli in a Battle of the Sexes match.

“It was amazing to attend and be part of such a high profile event and see the stars that we look up to and admire play so well on the court” -Dr. Patterson.

The stars faced off in multiple singles and doubles matches and at the end of a very competitive match, team Elton — Roddick, Williams, Robert Kendrick and Vicky Duval — won 24-18 over team Billie Jean — Bartoli, John Isner, Jean-Julien Rojer and Taylor Townsend.

Florida Sports Injury and Orthopedic Institute physicians Dr. Varma and Dr. Patterson were asked to come early on this beautiful Sunday.  They were given backstage VIP passes putting them in the midst of all the action while also being readily available to treat any injuries.

It was an event like no other. The game wasn’t a typical quiet tennis match, it was an event where the stars interacted with the audience and had fun playing. Celebrities played the game, the crowd yelled and cheered and everyone had an unforgettable night! More than $700,000 was raised, to be split between the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the Hope and Help Center of Central Florida.

“For me the best part was to see Sir Elton John play, I had no idea he could play so well” says Dr. Varma.

This was a night that Florida Sports Injury and Orthopedic Institute will never forget.  Thank you ESPN Wide World of Sports for such an amazing opportunity. It just goes to show you – whether you’re young or young at heart, a big time celebrity or a simple spectator – it is always our goal at Florida Sports Injury and Orthopedic Institute to get you back in the game!
